Self Contained Luxury Cabins

CGI

The Falkland Islands Company – Stage One

THE BRIEF

The Falkland Islands Company has a long and rich tradition of major retail, residential and commercial operation developments on the islands and approached Space VR with a collaborative opportunity to produce material for a number of staged projects.
The first being 30 self-contained luxury cabin retreats located around the remote bays and peninsulas of the East island. We gave them two options for these cabins, the first being the ‘Rockhopper’, an ‘A’ frame design sleeping groups of up to 4 and the ‘Albatross’, a larger construction suitable for up to 12 guests.

THE SOLUTION

Due to the number of interior and exterior spaces to display, we designed a CGI campaign consisting of still images, animations and a full marketing/promotional video. The animations were going to be subject to multiple changes so we employed our real time render software that allows us to re render the footage extremely quickly. The 2-minute commercial marketing video was produced by us incorporating specially shot helicopter footage of the islands along with additional stock video clips and audio. Still images were also used as they were vital as accompanying material for all other areas of interest.

THE RESULTS

Once completed, the presentation as a whole provided a comprehensive and fully rounded proposal, which aided the Falkland Islands Company to proceed further into the development. It also allowed Space VR to showcase its wide range of skills when producing visual material.
We’re especially proud of our promotional video which can be found here, and take a look at Stage Two, a huge 160 house residential development that uses Virtual Reality as a means to explore the built environment.

Heritage Bar

THE BRIEF

Our client purchased a brand-new ground floor unit in the centre of Newcastle’s developing business area beside the famous St. James’ Park football stadium. They requested visual representation that offered a wider view of the venue, showing both a quality city centre bar to the front of the venue, and to the rear, a more sports-orientated space with food and beverage table service.

THE SOLUTION

We advised a 360 panoramic. This is when we set the CG camera up in such a way to produce a full 360-degree render that can then be manipulated in such a way as to allow the user to see the whole space by navigating around the view from a fixed point.

THE RESULTS

A 360 panoramic is an incredibly useful way to see around your entire space from a fixed point. They require more modelling as everything in the view is visible, but the benefits are that the clients will get a more complete appreciation of the venue not always possible from still images. Another benefit of a 360 panoramic is that they’re extremely straightforward to produce compared to CG animations and V.R, making it a very cost-effective option offering an all-encompassing view.

Thorpe Thewles Housing Development

THE BRIEF

Thorpe Thewles is a new high-end housing development for which our client needed visual representation to acquire funding and for online marketing.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation.

We suggested still images for this project due to the number of units in the development. Often, we’re asked to produce those images without a full breakdown of every design facet such as landscaping and final material and design decisions to boundaries and fencing. With our experience we’re able to confidently add these missing assets to compliment the scheme without further interaction from our busy clients.

THE RESULTS

Every CGI company needs to be able to produce quick, accurate and effective exterior images for housing developments. At Space VR we pride ourselves in this field, understanding exactly what the client is looking for, and can be relied upon to deliver fantastic images.

Hadrian’s Coffee and Deli

THE BRIEF

A major development in Birmingham led to the client requesting a CG record of a large modern coffee shop space along with other amenities for the residential apartments attached above.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation and Animations.

For such a large development we recommended still images and a full area animation. Animations can showcase a large amount of space relatively quickly, more than still images, of which it would take a considerable amount to cover the area.

THE RESULTS

For this project we used a new 3D programme called Twinmotion. This is a real-time visualisation tool that allows us to quickly produce high quality images and animations. Traditionally, CG imagery production can be a long process, but Twinmotion has been specially designed to bypass this and give the illustrator more immediate feedback. The still image rendering process is almost instant instead of hours, and animations take only minutes rather than days to output.

The Purple Peacock

THE BRIEF

The Peacock is a new large-scale city centre hospitality venue with a designed flexibility to cater for a lunchtime and evening eating experience. It also operates as a late-night stage-based entertainment venue, so the client thought it was important for a complete visual representation of all aspects.

THE SOLUTION

CG still imagery
Knowing the main change between the times of day for the venue would be fully adjustable mood lighting, we recommended still images. These are extremely controllable as only what is in front of the camera needs to be modelled, textured, and lit, unlike animations where there is much more to create and organize due to the continually moving camera. We opted to show the venue primarily in an evening setting as that would display the adjustable lighting more effectively and allow us to introduce additional detailed spotlights acting as a highlight to the cabaret acts and stage area.

THE RESULTS

Because of our experience, changing the mood lighting and atmosphere is a relatively time inexpensive endeavour and affords the client a quick and effective solution when requiring multiple ‘times of day’ versions of the same images. They were extremely pleased with our renders and based a marketing strategy online, and in print, around them. Further work has been secured on future projects for a similar treatment from the images produced here.

RESIDENTIAL HOME

THE BRIEF

Our client needed some CG still images to market their property portfolio online, and in printed brochures advertising panels.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation.

When time is a factor, rendered CG images are often the most cost/time effective choice. Our experience and continuing technological researching allow us to rapidly output such images using trusted and reliable lighting, modelling and texturing techniques. We also have an immense asset library, and fully developed 3D textures. This will massively reduce the time it takes to create these scenes and results in a much more cost-effective product to the client.

THE RESULTS

Images such as these are our ‘main stay’ and something in which we have long extensive experience. We know exactly how to achieve effective, rapidly produced images that explain the story with minimal involvement from our busy clients which they appreciate.

Dalziel Terrace

THE BRIEF

The client asked us to create imagery for their new exterior garden terrace. We wanted to adopt a warm interior feel when designing the lighting and adapt it to an outdoor social environment that customers saw as an extension of the clients existing interior space.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation.

After consulting with the client, we decided that still CG imagery would best suit their needs in the time available. Next was to establish what time of day we’d set for the illustration. A bright midday sun is more usual, but we wanted to convey more of an evening feel to reflect a relaxed and more mature atmosphere. To achieve warm evening lighting we used a photograph of a sunset to act as a light source to subtly illuminate the scene generally with reds and purples.

This gives a wonderfully soft and atmospheric effect without harsh shadows, fitting the time of day. Details on the tables were picked up with warm point lights located where we thought appropriate.

THE RESULTS

We like to think this computer generated still image has achieved that warmth and cosy feel. Soft general lighting and detail spotlights make a very effective pipeline when creating atmospheric, welcoming hospitality areas.

Rustica

THE BRIEF

Rustica is a high-end commercial restaurant designed with natural and traditional finishes. The client implemented fully adjustable mood lighting.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation.

We’re often called upon to render the same image but with different ‘time of day’ lighting. The look of a premises can dramatically change from one to the other and it’s vital for the client so see the potential of both. The daytime version was achieved with a simple daylight system, relying on a digital sun, (out of shot), to flood the interior space with natural light, while the evening setup relied more on artificial lighting from low-level table lights and wall lights creating a warm welcoming atmosphere.

THE RESULTS

The two contrasting images starkly display the differences between the two timelines. When a venue is open all day, the lighting needs to be appropriately adjustable as it plays a huge part in creating a friendly space. In this example the daytime image needed convey a bright and airy lunchtime feel, while the evening lighting needed to provide a more intimate and personal atmosphere. This is a relatively easy process in the creation of these CG images, yet extremely important as it can give the client confidence in their designers’ approach.

Cornhill Castle Lodge

THE BRIEF

This large-scale luxurious hotel and wedding venue underwent a major redesign of the wedding reception room using many intricate mouldings to the ceiling, and heavily detailed accessories to the remainder of the room so we felt it very important to capture that in the CG imagery.

THE SOLUTION

CG Still Images

Still image CGI’s remain such an effective product when attempting to convey grand scale and detail in open spaces that we advised the client to go with this option. They are often more controllable than other options such as animations or 360 renders, which create their own challenges due to the amount of modelling required.

THE RESULTS

Our modelling and lighting programmes are extremely effective. To achieve a bright and airy, yet sophisticated environment we added a lot of special effect post-processing to these images that would’ve been very difficult to achieve in other outputs. In this section, we have a photograph of the venue alongside two CGI’s for comparison.

Residential living

THE BRIEF

This was an in-house test setup utilising new lighting approaches and texturing techniques in our 3D software.

THE SOLUTION

Still Image Creation and Animations.

To achieve a comprehensive study, we opted for creating still images and CG animations as we thought that would deliver a more complete picture of this internal project. Quite often a VR company will use tried and trusted lighting setups that work well enough with interior residential CGI’s. Daytime lighting, offering a lot of natural internal illumination, and an evening setup requiring most of the internal light to be artificial, created from spotlights, floor lights etc. Alternatively, at Space VR, we always try to find an approach that maybe goes a little further.

For our images and animations, we’ve tried to achieve a little of both in each image. You can clearly see it’s a daytime setting, but cloudy enough outside to also require ceiling spotlights which are introduced with subtlety and balance.

THE RESULTS

We believe the ‘devil is in the detail’, and while this project needed extensive test rendering to achieve the most effective lighting balance, we like to think the time spent on these little differences is not unimportant and ultimately raises our images above our competitors.
